Much is made of Personal Electrical Safety, yes it is of prime importance, however often Personal Safety takes precedence over concerns of fire safety and it gets left out of the Risk Assessment. As a result, little consideration is taken to reduce fire hazards in particular fire hazards concerning power boards and extension Leads. Over the years there has been an increase in the number of fires caused by electrical power-boards and leads. The origin of these fires has been identified as the improper use of electrical leads, and incorrect placement of power-boards.

By and large the most prevalent electrical fire faults have been attributed to the overloading of multiple outlet power-boards by electrical appliances which exceed the maximum rated output of the boards. This can cause the power-board to overheat, melt and catch fire. Included is the practice of placing double adaptors on power-boards to increase the number of power outlets, and the piggybacking of double adaptors on power points. These are extremely dangerous practices.

Most common Power-boards are designed with a 10 amp maximum rating and may incorporate up to eight power outlets. However, some electrical appliances such as Urns, Heaters, Toaster Ovens etc, can draw up to 4 amps for each item plugged in , making it relatively easy to exceed the power-board rating if all the outlets were in operation.

It is important that all your electrical appliances are used strictly according to manufacturer’s recommendations and ensure that any electrical appliances used individually or as a group do not exceed the power-boards maximum rating.

So What Can I do about it? (Prevention is the only way, cure is too late!)

Ensure power-board rating is not exceeded by the appliances attached to the power-board.

Do not use double adaptors in the Workplace (power boards cost just a little bit more and offer overload protection and more outlets)

Never Chain from one power board to another to increase the number of power points.

Conduct regular inspections of power-boards for visual damage or discolouring.

If you suspect that a power-board is faulty, immediately take it out of service or replace it.

Turn off powerboards at the power point when not in use.

Ensure adequate ventilation around the power-board to prevent overheating.

Use RCD protected Power Boards where fixed RCD protection is not available.

And don’t forget your Electrical Appliances.

Provide adequate ventilation space around electrical appliances to allow heat to vent freely.

Never operate electrical appliances in damp or wet areas.

Not only turn electrical appliances off at their switch, but also to turn off the power point

By taking these simple precautions the risk of fire starting from the use of electrical equipment can be minimised. Remember, above all, the best protection for you and your co-workers/employees is to have a properly installed and operating Smoke Alarm.

Update your Fire Emergency Plan and ensure that all staff know where to evacuate and assemble

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< 0 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

<ins datetime="2012-01-03T06:09:45+00:00"></ins>Filled with water & chemicals, the human body offers little resistance to electrical shock. Upon receiving a shock, it will flow through the body with little obstruction. Injuries can include:

Burns to the skin, usually in two places – entry point and exit point.

Burns to internal tissues.

Electrical interference/damage to heart, causing it to stop or beat erratically.

What to do for a person during and after receiving an electric shock:

REMAIN CALM

It is important you remain calm & follow some important steps to help increase the patient’s chances of survival & minimise the risk to yourself & others.

FIRST AID

Call 000 and request an ambulance. If you are not trained in first aid, the 000 call-taker will guide you in what needs to be done until an ambulance arrives.

Follow D.R.S.A.B.C. (Danger, Response, Seek help, Airway, Breathing, Circulation)

Danger

Before responding, assess the situation and look for dangers and hazards, including the potential for you to receive an electric shock as well.

Turn off power at the mains supply board or at the power point.

To avoid receiving an electric shock yourself, DO NOT touch the person or what they are touching until you are 100% positive the power source is disconnected/removed from them and it is not a risk to you or other people.

Response

Check the person’s responsiveness using the “touch and talk” method. If not responding, place in the recovery position.

SEEK MEDICAL HELP

As soon as possible, seek medical help for the patient. If you haven’t called 000 & got an ambulance yet, do so now or get someone else to do it now.

Airway

Ensure the person is breathing and has a clear airway. If able, place the head slightly down and clear the mouth.

Breathing

If not breathing, put back over onto back and perform EAR (expired air resuscitation) by following the instructions from 000 call-taker (or first aid trainer if you have a first aid certificate).

Circulation

Check for circulation / heart beat. If not present, perform CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation) by following the instructions from 000 call-taker (or first aid trainer if you have a first aid certificate).

Last reviewed: January 2012. The information published here was accurate at the time of publication and is not intended to replace medical advice. Immediately seek proper advice from the 000 helpdesk. The information provided here is of a general nature & is not a substitute for proper first aid training.

Ladder Safety

In Australia hundreds of workers and house holders suffer injury and even fatality from a falling off a ladder. This can be from using a ladder to access another area at height or from using a ladder to perform maintenance and installation tasks.

The Basics

Assess the environment before climbing any ladder. Here is a check list

Ensure that there is a level and secure footing.

It is essential that you secure ladders and lock the safety arms.

Check there are no overhead obstacles

Also check the area is free from debris around the ladder.

Lock the Ladder

Ladders should always be opened fully and the locking arms locked into place before climbing the steps. This is true for both step ladders and extension ladders.

Level and Solid Ground for the Ladder Base

Place a ladder on level working surfaces or level the area before attempting to climb the ladder. This ground should be solid ground. Use blocking material to level the ladder base. Choose flat, solid boards or timber that will provide a stable platform

Be aware of your climbing and working limits

Never climb on the top or the next to last step of the ladder. Never put yourself in a position where you have to stretch in order to reach what you are working on. Get a taller ladder to complete the task and don’t risk it.

Working with power tools

Power Tools can add to the dangers of standing on top of a ladder. If a drill bit sticks and jars you around, you may fall right off of the ladder , best if you can tie off a ladder or work with a buddy who is holding the ladder. Do not use power boards on ladders, instead use a heavy duty “Y” split extension cable (one plug supplying 2 sockets) . Where ever possible use connection clips to secure inter- connecting plugs and sockets ensuring they don’t come apart. Also use an RCD power lead when no fixed RCD protection is on offer . When working on Electrical equipment or using power tools it is best to uses a fibre glass ladder it is the best choice for safety from electrical conductivity.

Assess hidden dangers before climbing a ladder

Beware hidden dangers like bare wires and obstacles that you may bump you head on while climbing the ladder. Ladders also become unstable when your full weight is atop the ladder causing the top to shift and in turn causing your feet to push the top of the ladder in one direction. .

Work with a buddy

Have a helper hold the ladder for support if at all possible. Having someone foot the ladder and hold the ladder from sliding is always a plus in safety when someone is going up for the first time. That way the ladder is secure for you to use and wherever possible and tie the ladder off too.

Climbing and Standing On a Ladder Precautions

These tips should be followed to ensure safe operation of ladder work.

Always face the ladder when climbing or descending.

Keep both feet on the ladder, never put one foot on a rung & the other foot on a different surface.

Do not climb higher than 2nd to last rung on stepladders or 3rd to last rung on extension ladders.

Never stand on the top or the paint shelf of a stepladder.

Use Proper Ladder Angles

Don’t place an extension ladder’s angle too steep or spanned too far away from the work area. Follow the manufacturers recommended angle guides for ladder safety. Use the 1:4 ratio to ensure a stable working platform. Place the base of the ladder 1 foot away of whatever it leans against for every 4 feet of height to the point where the ladder contacts at the top.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< 0 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

IF YOU EVER:

Feel a tingle from an appliance or Damage an appliance or Spill liquid on/or near an appliance

Turn off the main switch immediately, then unplug the appliance. Repairs should always be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor. You should also turn off the main switch and contact a professional if you feel a tingle from plumbing, other metal or your sink. This could indicate problems with earthing.

Don’t do it yourself

Attempting to do electrical work yourself is against the law and could cause serious injury or death. All electrical wiring work, including the connection and technical maintenance of fixed appliances, like hotplates, ovens, ceiling fans or water heaters, must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor. You should always follow the manufacturer’s electrical directions for using and maintaining your appliances. Home made extension cords can be a real hazard too; pre-assembled ones are cheaper and much safer.

Non-electrical DIY work.

Whenever you plan to work around the house or garden, think about the location of powerlines and cables. This is particularly important if you are cutting, nailing or screwing into walls or partitions, or using a metal ladder outdoors.

Home safety checklist

In every room:

check for any damaged or broken appliances, power points, light switches or power leads

check for any ‘stacked’ double adapters or excessive use of extension leads

check for exposed power points within reach of children, and fit plastic safety inserts

In the kitchen

Make sure that small appliances are well away from the sink or draining board

In the bathroom

Remove portable heaters; if necessary arrange to have a proper bathroom heater installed

Make sure everyone in the house knows that hair dryers, shavers, and other appliances must be used only with dry hands and special care is taken ensure that appliances do not come into contact with water.

The laundry, pool or spa

electricity supplies in wet areas should be protected by installed or portable safety switches; these sensitive devices instantly cut off power in the event of an irregularity

use only low voltage (12-24 volt) accessories with, or near pools, fountains, spas or other water installations.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< 0 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The 2 Major hazards attributed to electrical equipment and wiring are electrical shock and fire. Electrical shock occurs when the body becomes part of the electric circuit, either when a part of your body comes in contact with both of the active component (Active/Neutral)wires of an electrical circuit, or one wire of an energized circuit and the Earth wire (or grounded wire)…., or a foreign conductive object that has become energized by contact with an electrical conductor.

The severity and effects of an electrical shock depend on a number of factors, such as the pathway through the body, the amount of current, the length of time of the exposure, and whether the skin is wet or dry (ie sweat). Water is a great conductor of electricity, allowing current to
The effect of the shock may range from a slight tingle to severe burns to cardiac arrest. The chart below shows the general relationship between the degree of injury and amount of current for a 60-cycle hand-to-foot path of one second’s duration of shock. While reading this chart, keep in mind that most electrical circuits can provide, under normal conditions, up to 20,000 milliamperes of current flow

In addition to the electrical shock hazards, sparks from electrical equipment can serve as an ignition source for flammable or explosive vapors.

Even loss of electrical power can result in extremely hazardous situations. Flammable or toxic vapors may be released as a chemical warms when a refrigerator or freezer fails. Fume hoods may cease to operate, allowing vapors to be released into the work area. So take care with your electrical equipment and consider all contingencies in the operation of that equipment.

Fuses and circuit breakers

Fuses and circuit breakers are built to fail in conditions of excess current which can overload the electrical wires in your home. These overloads are often caused by faulty appliances. When an overload occurs, the fuse melts before the wires can overheat, which reduces the risk of fire. Circuit breakers will often trip quicker and more importantly they can be reset to help diagnose and remove faults

Always replace a blown fuse with the correct fuse wire. Never use fuse wire that is heavier than the recommended gauge.

Never use any other type metal or wire.

If fuses keeps blowing, or a circuit breaker keeps tripping, check that your appliances are not faulty.

If fuses continue to blow, or circuit breakers continue to trip after appliances are unplugged, there could be a problem with your wiring. Contact a licensed electrician immediately.

Safety switches

Safety switches look similar to circuit breakers, but they provide extra protection from electric shock. Safety switches monitor the flow of electricity and if any irregularity is detected, the electricity supply is immediately cut off.
Homes with children or backyard workshops should consider installing safety switches to reduce the risk of electrical accidents. New homes are required to have safety switches installed. Licensed electrical contractors can install safety switches in older homes at a reasonable cost. You can also purchase portable safety switches for appliances and extension cords.

Power board safety advice

The practice of overloading power boards with many appliances (particularly large current devices, heaters, urns, portable air conditioners) and adding other power boards or adapters to increase capacity are undoubtedly the major cause of fire at the Home and in the Work Place.

DON’T:

Plug in high power devices into power boards, ie Fan heaters, It is far safer to connect these appliances to a wall outlet

connect double adaptors to power boards

cascade a chain of power boards together, either double up your power outlet on the wall or get another outlet installed.

use damaged power boards

use power boards in wet areas such as Laundries and Bathrooms

use power boards as a substitute for permanent power outlets

use power boards in dirty or dusty areas use power boards with shutter covers in these areas.

DO:

always ensure that plugs fit firmly in the power board sockets

regularly check the power board for any signs of damage, cracking and discolouration

keep power boards out of the reach of children and pets

allow for adequate ventilation around the power board.

make sure you have an RCD or safety switch protected circuit that is supplying the power board

consider installing a permanent power outlet so you do not need to use a power board.

Have your appliances and power boards regularly inspected, tested and tagged, particularly if you are a business, charity or public organisation with Workers/Volunteers/General public using Power boards and appliances.

Using extension cords safely

DO:

always use an extension cord that has earth, active and neutral wires and a 3-pin plug – never use a 2 core flex (two wires only) as an extension cord.

ensure that the cord is fully unwound so it doesn’t overheat

DON’T:

join extension cords together. If you need an extension cord longer than 25 metres ask a licensed electrical contractor to install a general purpose power point.

use extension cords in wet weather or where they could contact water. If your extension cord gets wet, switch it off, and discard it.

place extension cords where they can be walked on or driven over. This may damage the cord and expose live wires. You can mount your extension cord on a fixture with a height of 2.5m (8ft) using tape or cable ties.

overload extension cords. The maximum load on an extension cord should not exceed 2,300 watts (In Australia that is nominally 10amps at 230 volts supply). Check the labelling on the extension cord to see how many watts it is rated at. Also consider using extension cords are labelled Construction Grade in outdoor and potentially hostile environments.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< 0 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Introduction.

Using tools in the Workplace requires a lot of forethought and planning. It is important to get to know your tools, its capabilities, its features and most importantly its safety requirements. Neglect to do this and you could risk injury to yourself and others. Being aware of the Job required, the potential hazards around you and knowing how to use the power tool safely will help you minimize these risks.

Read the Manual.

It is of prime importance when using a power tool for the first time is to become familiar with it. Every Time you buy a new power tool, you should read the instructions. Understanding how to properly use the tool can cut down on work related injury.

You see, knowing how to operate the tool will help you understand the tool’s speed, cut depth, and power. Knowing the location of safety features ie emergency shutoff switch and other cut off features which allow the tool to operate safely and effectively.

Risk Assessment.

Perform a risk assessment before beginning any task. Take in all the aspects of the environment your working in, the equipment you are using and any potential hazards that may impact your ability to perform the task safely and effectively. This Risk Assessment should include:

Inspecting the leads for cuts, plugs damaged or pulled to expose wires.

Get your tools tested and tagged regularly to ensure Safe Operation.

Identifying safety guards and shut-off issues.

Inspecting blades for looseness or dullness.

Identifying cracks or defects in the tool.

Ensuring the tool is plugged into a RCD protected outlet or device.

Inspecting the area that you will be working on. Wood and other materials where users are drilling or sawing should be clear of nails, steel, electrical lines, and plumbing lines.

Always make sure the work area is clear of tripping hazards, fire hazards, and slippery substances.

Wear the appropriate Protective Clothing.

Last but not least ensure that you are dressed for the job. Clothing should not be too loose that it can catch in the power tool, and jewellery should never be worn during operation. In addition, protective clothing suggested for the power tool use should be worn. Protective equipment like eye goggles, hearing protection, and face masks may be suggested by the manufacturer.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< 0 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Use only Australian standards approved equipment

Staff should do regular Checking of all electrical equipment to ensure that all cords are free of wear and especially where single insulated wires are exposed, and that to check that insulating covering is free of cracks, holes, or other damage. All equipment covers and casings are in good order and that quick release switches are in Good working order.

Any electrical equipment that is damaged, malfunctioning or shows signs of out of ordinary wear … eg excessive heating or giving off a “burning” odour, it should be tagged “Danger do not Operate” removed from use and then repaired by a licensed electrical repairer.

Power Outlets on the wall must free of cracks, breaks, or other obvious damage. Outlet damage must be reported immediately for repair.

If equipment produces shock, no matter how slight, it should be tagged “Danger do not Operate” removed from use and then repaired by a licensed electrical repairer.

Operators of Electrical equipment should avoid excess bending, stretching and kinking of electrical supply cords. Cords must never be pulled out by the lead from wall outlets. Cords must never be stapled, tacked, or nailed to walls or floors because insulation can become damaged if it is placed under stress or is breached by metal fixings

Take care of your Electrical Equipment and it will take care of you!

Here at Tested & True ~ test & tag, we can come to your work place and do an assessment of your Electrcal Hazards it is usually offered as an extra service and conducted at the same time as we test and tag your Electrical Equipment.
